What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is a globally accepted English language testing system for non-native English speakers. The British Council, IDP, and Cambridge English jointly administer IELTS.

Over 3,000 academic institutions in Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United States accept IELTS. Over 3.5 million tests were taken in more than 140 nations in 2018. It covers high stakes for English language testing systems.

Both IELTS Academic and IELTS General serve as valid proof of English proficiency. Candidates who wish to proceed for immigration purposes have to appear for the IELTS exam. The IELTS test report form (TRF) awards all test takers with a band, ranging from 1 to 9, based on their linguistic skills. Apparently, band 1 signifies a “non-user” and band 9 signifies an expert user of the English language.

Different Types of IELTS test

1. IELTS Academic Test
2. IELTS General Training Test

The individuals who are seeking admission to colleges and professional institutes to advance their education and professional skills need to appear for IELTS academic test. For instance, medical doctors and nurses who require to study or practice their profession in an English-speaking nation.

IELTS general training test is recommended for individuals who intend to pursue non-academic training and work in an English-speaking country. The general module is compulsory for the purpose of immigration procedures.

Before you book the IELTS test, make sure to check which test is required for your individual requirement. However, it is important to know the purpose and scope of the test, as IELTS academic and general cater to specific requirements.

At all locations, both general training and academic IELTS tests are conducted. Visit the British Council website to perceive information about available IELTS test dates.
